At our big craft show this weekend, we’re going to have 130 vendors from around the country and great local food, but we also have some hands-on crafting opportunities with local arts organizations!

  • ArtWorks: This arts organization (celebrating its 21st birthday this week!) will have button-making and coloring books.
  • Cincinnati Art Museum: They’ll be selling memberships at the show — and tickets to the new Van Gogh exhibit will be in the 100 swag bags we give out at the beginning of the show!
  • Contemporary Arts Center: The education department of the CAC always surprises us with hands-on activities such as jaunty hats and giftable goodies!
  • Enjoy the Arts: They will be offering Pictures with Krampus, tying to their upcoming event with the Cincinnati Museum Center on Dec. 8, “A Krampus Carol.”
  • Ensemble Theater: Members of the character crew will be joining us at Crafty Supermarket!
  • Kneel to No One: Artists Jaimie Filer and Anthony Tank Mansfield are going to be creating two massive drawings throughout the day of the show, and they will raffle them off to lucky shoppers!
  • Main Library MakerSpace: These fantastic makers will be bringing a button maker and other crafty supplies!

What to eat at our holiday show

Shopping really works up an appetite, so we’ve got a variety of great food vendors at our holiday show coming up on Saturday, Nov. 19. We’ve got sweet and savory, familiar favorites and new flavors! Plus, the cafeterias at the Rec Center and elsewhere on UC’s campus will be open, so you can grab a snack or a soda there as well. You can see directions to campus and a map here.

essential shopper guide to crafty supermarket!

Our big craft show is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 19 — so soon! The most important thing to know about Crafty Supermarket this year is that our holiday show is at a new location this year and happening the weekend before Thanksgiving. Because Music Hall is under renovation, we’re taking over the University of Cincinnati Rec Center’s six-court gymnasium. Here’s all the info you need to know to have a great day of shopping!

Essentials

What: Crafty Supermarket’s Holiday Show (here’s the Facebook event)
When: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016
Where: UC Rec Center, 2820 Bearcat Way, Cincinnati, OH 45221
Cost: Free to the public!

Parking and directions

The UC Rec Center is right next to Nippert Stadium and the Student Life Center in the heart of the University of Cincinnati campus in Corryville. Here is a Google Map. The gymnasium is on the lower level; there is elevator access to the gymnasium.

There are many public transportation options to get to our show. Metro bus lines that have stops by the University of Cincinnati include 17, 19, 24, 31, 46, 51 and 78. There are also multiple RedBike locations around campus.

There are many parking garages on the UC campus, and while we don’t have direct influence on their prices or policies, it’s likely that there will be flat day-rate parking for campus garages. (Day rates on campus are often $5 or $10.) All campus garages are ADA accessible, as is the Rec Center. We definitely encourage you to carpool with friends to save money and ease congestion!

The UC main campus in Corryville is easily accessible from interstates 71 and 75. When plotting your route to the show, we recommend using one of the garages as your target address; it isn’t possible to drive up directly in front of the Rec Center. The Campus Green Garage is the closest one to the Rec Center, and it’s accessible from MLK Drive. You may also be able to find metered street parking near campus. Here’s a map that shows where parking garages and RedBike stations are nearby. The blue star marks the entrance to the Rec Center:

Here’s a closer view of what campus looks like around where the entrance to the Rec Center is:

Insider advice

  • Want one of our 100 swag bags? Arrive early! By the time the show starts at 11 a.m., we usually have a good line going.
  • We love pets, but only service animals are allowed inside the show.
  • If you arrive at the UC Rec Center before the show opens at 11 a.m., please wait in line. We can’t allow shoppers in the venue until the show officially starts for everyone’s safety!
  • Many of our vendors accept credit cards, but not all of them do, so we recommend bringing cash to the show. There are also PNC, Fifth Third and US Bank ATMs on UC’s campus.
  • Ben Davis of Bad Veins will be spinning tunes all day as our in-house DJ.
  • If you prefer to leisurely peruse all our vendors’ wares, come in the afternoon! Things will slow down after 4 p.m., and our vendors are well-stocked so you don’t have to worry about missing the good stuff!
  • In terms of food at the show, we’ll have food trucks outside and some food vendors inside, and most of the cafeterias on campus will be open. If you want to make a whole day of it, there are also tons of great restaurants and bars within walking distance of UC.

Help out at our big holiday craft show!

Crafty Supermarket’s holiday show is huge: More than 100 handmade vendors will come from all around the Midwest to show their best work to thousands of shoppers. To help us make the craft show the best it can be, we enlist volunteers and work with sponsors — and here’s how you can get involved:

Volunteering

At our big holiday show on Nov. 19 at the UC Rec Center, we have a couple of opportunities for people to help out. (And when you assist us for a couple hours, you’ll get one of our famous swag bags!) Volunteers help us out in one of four areas: helping shoppers know where everything is, assisting vendors who need a break, helping load in at the beginning of the day and cleaning up at the end of the day. You can learn more and submit your info here. We’ll get back to you a few weeks before the show with the schedule. (Note that we sometimes get more volunteer applications than we can take, but we’ll get back to you either way!)

Partnerships

We work with all kinds of local organizations who love handmade and want to help spread the word. From arts nonprofits and landmark institutions to DIY shops and enterprises, if you support the maker movement, we’d love to work with you! Learn more about partnership opportunities here and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have an idea of how we can work together!

call for vendors: apply for our big holiday show!

Calling all crafters! Applications for Crafty Supermarket’s 2016 holiday craft show are open from July 15 to Sept. 1! Applications for the Crafty Supermarket holiday craft show are now closed! We will let everyone who applied know about their acceptance status by Sept. 15.

The craft show is at the University of Cincinnati’s Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. (We usually do our holiday show at Music Hall in downtown Cincinnati, but it’s under renovation!) Our show features handmade goods only — no commercial products.

We expect more than 6,000 shoppers at our handmade market, and we’ll also have a live DJ, hands-on craft activities, local food and free swag bags for the first 100 shoppers!

HOW TO APPLY

Please read our Crafter FAQ before you apply.

In the online application, you’ll be asked to upload up to five images in JPG, GIF or PNG format. (The images should be at least 400×600 pixels but no bigger than 1 MB in size each.) Please name your files in this format: BusinessName1.jpgBusinessName2.jpg, and so on. (If you need help resizing your images, try a free service such as ShrinkPictures.)

There’s a nonrefundable application fee of $10. (You’ll be guided to pay via PayPal when you complete the application. If you need help, PayPal has tutorials on its website — click on the Send Money tab.) The vendor fee for our show is $150, but if you’re accepted, the application fee counts towards the table fee.

When you submit the application, you should receive a confirmation message and a confirmation email from us and be taken to PayPal to pay the application fee. If that doesn’t happen, your application might not have gone through — email us to check on it.

We will stop accepting applications at 11:59 p.m. Sept. 1. We’ll notify all crafter applicants of their acceptance status by Sept. 15. Thanks for your interest!

Click here to submit your application!

I missed the deadline! Can I still apply?

We get more applications for the show than we can accept, so we can’t allow any late applications out of fairness to crafters who applied before the deadline. If a spot opens up from a vendor being unable to attend the show, we select alternates from the people who applied before the deadline.

If you want to apply to be in our next show, be sure to follow us here on the website, on Facebook or via our e-newsletter. We broadcast our upcoming opportunities in all those places! Information about our 2017 spring show will be posted in January.

thanks for a great show + save the date!

Thank you to all the fine folks who came to Crafty Supermarket on Saturday! Our 50 vendors from across the country brought their A game, and we brought our credit cards. About 1,400 shoppers came out to be with us on the beautiful spring day, and we had extra visitors in the form of three gigantic bean bags called PLOP! (They’ll be on the CCAC lawn for the next few weeks.)

Our wonderful sponsors helped make it all happen, and DJ Ben Davis kept us grooving all day. Thank you to Pinwheel Print Shop for designing our swag totes and Aaron Kent of DIY Printing for screenprinting them! We love how SPRING they turned out:

Big hugs go out to our volunteers for helping us set up and keep things running smoothly! Thanks to Indigo HippoArtWorks Cincinnati, the Contemporary Arts Center education team and Cut and Sewn for helping everybody get crafty with hands on activities all day!

Because our usual holiday venue of Music Hall is going under renovation this summer, our next show will be at a new venue! On Nov. 19, 2016, we’ll be taking over the gymnasium in the UC Recreation Center, in the heart of the University of Cincinnati campus in Clifton Heights. Application info for vendors will be posted in July. Stay crafty!

PS! If you love the Clifton Cultural Arts Center as much as we do, please follow the Friends of the CCAC Facebook page to stay up to date on their fight to stay in their building. There is a very real danger that the CCAC could be kicked out of its home of nearly a decade. Speak up and tell the school board why you love the CCAC!
